What is MIG Welding?
MIG welding is a technical shorthand for Metal Inert Gas welding, though it is formally known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). It has become one of the most popular welding processes today because of its simplicity and speed. Specifically, this method joins two pieces of metal by using a continuous solid wire electrode that is heated and fed into the weld pool from a welding gun.
How it works:
When the operator pulls the trigger, the machine creates an electric arc between the consumable wire electrode and the base material. Furthermore, this intense heat melts the wire, allowing it to act as a filler that fuses the two metal pieces together. Simultaneously, the welding gun releases a steady stream of shielding gas—typically argon or a mix of CO2. This is a critical step because the gas protects the weld pool from atmospheric contaminants like nitrogen and oxygen. Consequently, without this protective “envelope,” the weld would become porous and brittle, leading to structural failure.
